Coral collecting
-
Collect healthy but vulnerable specimens.
-
Collect only as much coral as is required for the plugs of that day
-
Wave your hand in front of the corals before touching them (polyps
retract)
-
Wear latex gloves to prevent contamination from any residues on your
skin (if no gloves available wash hands before any other action taken)
-
Take dive gear, collecting bags, plastic bags, latex gloves and
clippers.
-
Collect just one fragment per bag.
-
At return, swim back as close to the storage area as possible.
-
Place corals in tub 2 removing the plastic bags underwater.
Coral fragments
-
Clean hands???
-
Cut collected corals up into fragments with clippers (wave first for
polyps!)
·
Brain: No splitting, use whole
colony or tear drops.
·
Star(let) coral: Make fragments
with healthy individual polyps.
·
Leaf and plate corals : 1/2-inch square
pieces.
·
Flower corals- corallite must
remain intact.
·
Gorgonians: 1 inch lengths.
Remove flesh carefully down to the woody skeleton of the bottom 1/4 of the
stem.
-
For branching corals and gorgonians: Remove dead tissue from top and
bottom.
-
Place fragments in cleanest part of tub or in tub 1 if space available.
Molds
-
Make draining holes in bottom plastic cups.
-
Fill up
with wet sand.
-
Make imprint with medicine cup.
-
Make another thinner hole in the center with the
handle of a wooden spoon.
Cement plugs
-
Premix hydrostatic cement with 25% microsilica.
-
Add ADVA flow - one drop per medicine cup cement
-
Add water - 1 part water (from bucket 1) on 3
parts cement, and stir immediately till liquid consistency.
-
Pour it quickly into the molds.
-
Put coral fragment in cement after quick
fresh water dip, polyps directed upwards
-
Make sure the cement covers no
coral polyps!
-
Put the cup with the plug back in Tub 2 for drying
of cement.
-
Carefully check if cement is dry (minutes to
hours), take plug out and rinse off.
-
Place the rinsed coral plugs in Tub 1 until ready
to plant.
-
Make sure that coral plugs are separated enough,
especially different species.
-
Siphon the sand and debris out of the tubs
-
If you need to clean your hands quickly use an
additional bucket (#3) with fresh water to prevent other water or the tubs from
getting polluted

Task |
Inflation team |
-Tank -Air nozzle -Screw driver -Rope |
-
Inflate the center ball. This must be done very
precisely, because the ball must be hard enough so the reef ball will float,
but not to hard because then the reef ball can brake. |
Walker team |
-Gloves -Old shoes |
-
Roll the reef ball into the water until it floats. -
Give the reef ball to the runners. -
Give the deflated center bladder to the walkers who will give them
back to the inflation team. |
Runner team |
-Screw drivers -Knife -Snorkel equip. -BCD |
-
Swim the reef ball carefully to the receiving team. -
While swimming it is important to keep the center ball wet, to keep it
from warming up and expanding. -
Take center bladder back.
Don't wait above the reefball but keep a save distance. -
Give the deflated center bladder to the walkers. |
Receiving team |
-Dive knife -Screw driver -Extra caps -Wetsuit |
-
Actual placement of reef ball -
Look where the reef ball should go. -
Deflate the center bladder until it starts to sink (don’t take to the
whole screw cap of -
The divers guide the ball to the bottom to make sure it sinks in the
right position. -
The divers deflate the center bladder and remove it from the reef ball
(make sure that the water doesn't enter the bladder). -
The snorkelers take the bladder at the surface and give it to the
runners. |
Safety & Back-up team |
-Whistle -Radio/ mega phone -Snorkel equip. -Dive set (ready to go) |

Be on watch in case something goes wrong. -
Leader takes good spot for to overview situation -
