Send An E-Mail to Forward to Georgia's DNR Georgia Coastal Management Program
The Department of Natural Resouces (DNR) has issued a draft of a Georgia Coastal Management Program (CMP) document for public review. The proposed plan is designed to be sufficient (just barely) to receive federal approval and associated financial and other benefits under the Coastal Zone Management Act. The CMP Program could be much stronger in appropriately guiding development in Georgia's 11 coastal counties. Nevertheless, it is a "giant leap for Georgiakind" and needs your support.
Phenomenal growth in coastal Georgia already is stretching water supply to its limits. The CMP addresses other issues such as increased population growth, declining fish populations, lack of beach access, impacts on endangered species and other issues.
The governor, local governments and state officials from the coast desperately need to hear that Georgia's draft program is a good thing.
Please call or write your local government officials, state representatives, and the governor and:
- Insist that the governor step forward now to publicaly reaffirm his commitment to a federally approved CMP program for Georgia.
- Persuade your local government, state senator, and representative that CMP will fulfill the need to guide, not stop, growth in the fast-developing coastal regions.
- Boast about the increasing economic power of tourism (in terms of cash generated, persons employed, and lower environmental costs) on the coast. Explain that without a healthy environment, the coast will have no economy. Stress that a federally approved CMP can bring the right kind of continued growth on the coast.
Any e-mail we recieve on the subject will be forwarded to the DNR.
