Qatar Science Club & Occidental Reef Ball Project

The Birth of a Reef Ball!

During May of 1997, the Reef Ball Development Group, sponsored by Occidental, journeyed half way around the world to teach the Qatar Science Club the ins and outs of how to build Reef Balls. Todd Barber, President of RBDG and Jim Strack, a Reef Ball volunteer made the journey. Here's some of the memorable moments in the start of an on-going project to add Reef Balls to the Arabian Gulf.

The President of Reef Ball meets the head of the
Qatar Science Club's Diving section who leads the project.

The first mold is set up

The local W.R. Grace representative re-creates the Reef Ball mix design taylored to local conditions (the heat!) and teaches the club how to make strong, durable, pH balanced concrete even with hand mixing techniques used by the club to encourage club member participation.

Team members mix the first batch.

and the team transfers the mix into the awaiting mold.

Once opened, the Bay Ball is moved off the base to be transported to the sea.

This Pallet Ball is lifted onto a truck donated to the
Science Club for the project by the Qatar Government.

The Reef Balls are off loaded in the sandy desert bordering the Arabian Gulf.

Extra help is given by some American military personnel who dive with the club members in their off hours while the club's press department films the event for the media. The Reef Balls are then rolled into the sea by hand, since the sand is too soft to get the truck down to the waters edge.

The Reef Balls get wet!...and the center bladders are inflated so the units can be floated into place.

MORE TO COME, STAY TUNED AS THE QATAR SCIENCE CLUB MONITORS THE DEVELOPMENT OF LIFE ON THE REEF BALLS!

Todd Barber presents a model Reef Ball to Occidental
for their assistance in bringing this project to life!

LIFE IS TOUGH IN THE GULF!!
